Spain vs Belgium — Five Clean Sheets in Five, Belgium Missing Their Anchor
Quarter-final 2 · Friday 10 July 2026 · 3:00 PM ET (12:00 PM PT) · SoFi Stadium, Inglewood CA · TSN 1/3/4/5 + CTV/Crave · Spain (1.61) favourite · Belgium 5.25
Spain meet Belgium in the World Cup quarter-final on Friday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood CA. The setting is a fixed-roof, climate-controlled venue on the campus of Hollywood Park — the same place Spain played their R16. The market has Spain 1.61 to win in 90 minutes, Belgium 5.25, the draw at 4.00. The number that has mattered all tournament is the zero next to Spain’s "conceded" column: five matches played, two goals conceded in the group stage, none in the four matches since. Unai Simón has not been beaten in open play since the group opener; De la Fuente’s side has won four straight, drawn one (0-0 with Cape Verde, the only blemish), and arrives as the second-shortest outright favourite in the field at 4.70. Belgium are a tougher read — unbeaten but with three draws in five, a 4-1 R16 win over the USA that flattered the finishing more than the run of play, and an ACL tear to Amadou Onana that removes their defensive anchor for the rest of the tournament. The line in this preview is the head-to-head history: Spain have never lost to Belgium at a major tournament (six wins, one draw across seven meetings, 16-3 on aggregate), and the most recent was a 2-0 in Brussels in September 2016.

The Onana absence is the line-mover
Amadou Onana tore his right ACL in the round-of-16 win over the USA. Belgium are without their deepest-lying midfielder for the rest of the tournament (9–12 month layoff per Goal.com and SICScore). The R16 set up in a 4-3-3 with Onana as the single pivot in front of the back four; without him, Domenico Tedesco has options — Youri Tielemans dropping deeper, or Aster Vranckx as a like-for-like — but none of them offer the same aerial and physical profile. Zeno Debast (late fitness test) is the day’s other Belgian doubt. Belgium still have Kevin De Bruyne (the assist leader of the tournament) and Jérémy Doku on the wing, and they scored four against the USA in the R16. The defensive shape, though, is thinner than the number on the board suggests.
Spain’s defensive run
Spain have not conceded in open play since the 0-0 with Cape Verde. The back four — Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella — has been near-flawless, and Unai Simón has not been forced into a high-difficulty save in any of the four clean sheets. The team-level xG against across the four clean sheets is the lowest of any side in the tournament. Nico Williams is a doubt (right adductor strain) and may start on the bench; if so, the Yamal-Williams axis becomes the Lamine Yamal-Ferran Torres axis, and Spain’s shape doesn’t change — only the wide-final-third dynamism does. Yeremy Pino is available (AC joint, shoulder, fit).
- Clean-sheet run (4 straight) and the lowest goals-against average of the eight quarter-finalists.
- Depth on the wings: Yamal + Williams, with Torres/Olise as like-for-like cover.
- A midfield three (Pedri/Rodri/Olmo or Gavi) that has not been out-pressed in this tournament.
- The head-to-head (6W 1D in 7 prior meetings; never lost to Belgium at a major tournament).
- Nico Williams doubt (right adductor); Yamal is a slight knock-and-rest candidate in the heat.
- The 1.61 line is short; Spain’s margin for error is small at SoFi.
- They have not played a knockout match yet against a top-tier side (Austria R32 was 3-0, but Austria sit deep and don’t press).
- Unbeaten in this tournament (W3 D2); De Bruyne’s assist rate remains the highest in the field.
- A 4-1 R16 win over the USA — the most coherent 90 minutes Belgium have played all tournament.
- Tielemans, De Bruyne and Doku can all play through a press if Spain push high.
- The 5.25 number gives them a real underdog payout in regulation.
- Onana OUT (ACL) — the deepest-lying midfielder, the only true ball-winner in the side.
- A back line that has conceded in three of five matches, and a 3-3 group-stage draw with Egypt that should have been a loss.
- Spain’s 1.61 is the second-shortest QF line of the four; the market has priced the absent midfielder into the Belgium side already.

The Spanish narrative — and the Belgian problem
The De la Fuente narrative arc is well-established: the youngest Spain side in a generation, built around Lamine Yamal and Pedri, conceding nothing and scoring enough. They are the only quarter-finalist with a negative goal-difference through the group (zero conceded, nine scored). Belgium are a side in transition — De Bruyne at 34, Onana out, Lukaku’s role reduced to a supersub cameo in the R16. The 2022 group-stage loss to Morocco (0-2) is still the freshest data point for a Belgian side that has yet to find a settled shape.
Where this lands for Canadian bettors
- Single-game line value. The 1.61 on Spain is the second-shortest QF line of the four. The value is on the side of the bookmaker. A 1.22–1.25 double chance (Spain or draw) is a fairer price for the floor; a Spain -1 Asian handicap at 1.95–2.05 (industry range) is the value play if you believe the back-four gap matters.
- Total / props. Spain’s last three matches have gone under 2.5. A Spain clean sheet at 1.95–2.10 is the cleanest of the QF totals markets; a Lamine Yamal assist at 2.40–2.60 is the player-prop angle.
- Outright. Spain 4.70 to lift the trophy (FanDuel via FOX Sports, 8 July 11:29 ET) is a fair outright price. If you expect the winner to come from the top half of the draw (FRA/ESP/MAR/BEL), Spain at 4.70 is shorter than the under-side (Belgium 31.0, Morocco 28.0) and reflects the cleanest path to a final on this side.
- Channel & kickoff. 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT kickoff. The broadcast is TSN 1/3/4/5 + CTV/Crave in Canada (RDS in French). The early West Coast start means a Canadian-friendly early afternoon.
